Monrovia – The Chairman of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), Cllr. Jangar Kowo has been released from police custody following his arrest by the Liberia National Police (LNP) on Saturday for allegedly obstructing police functions.

Kowo was detained during a protest calling for the release of former House Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa and several other lawmakers currently held at the Monrovia Central Prison.
Footage from the scene shows Kowo being manhandled, handcuffed, and forcibly placed into a police pickup before being transported to the Monrovia Central Prison. However, sources told FrontPage Africa that he was released shortly afterward and was seen heading to the CDC headquarters.

The protest erupted shortly after the Monrovia City Court ordered the incarceration of former Speaker Koffa and three sitting lawmakers in connection with the December 2024 fire that damaged a section of the Capitol Building. While full details of the charges remain unclear, the case has intensified political tensions, with CDC partisans decrying the arrests as politically motivated.
Kowo’s brief detention has further fueled the political drama, drawing concern from civil society organizations over the implications for due process and the perceived politicization of Liberia’s justice system.
Although CDC officials have not issued a formal statement, party insiders confirmed that an emergency meeting was convened in response to the escalating crisis.
This is a developing story. FrontPage Africa will continue to provide timely updates as new details emerge.
